For the first assignment of Cultures and Civilisations module, we were asked to prepare a video based on the theme given by our lecturers. Our group were given the theme "Food" and we had to make a timeline video showing how certain foods and traditions have changed (or remained) throughout the years.

The food we chose to focus on was kuih kapit, since it was a festive treat and is always served traditionally during Chinese New Year.  We chose Penang as the shooting location as we had relatives there who were all familiar with the process of making kuih kapit, and had all the tools required. Penang was also a place with many beautiful views and sites that fit our needs. Moreover, three of our members (including myself) lived there which makes everything easier.

It was a very interesting video to shoot as we got to bring out all our old vintage stuff from home as props, it was like travelling back to the 1960s or 70s. The location at a small kampung (Teammate Law Zhi Chang's grandmother's house) was a beautiful site which fits the old-style we want.  Zhi Chang's relatives were extremely hospitable and welcomed our whole team to use their home for our video, and even taught us how to make the kuih kapit! We made two containers of kuih kapit, one we finished that same day (we couldn't resist!) and the other we gave the tutor as a gift.

The video shows not only how kuih kapit is made, but also the differences in the preparing, making, selling and also enjoying the kuih kapit during Chinese New Year between past and present. It also shows how certain aspects such as culture and economy have grown, for example people nowadays are more financially stable and can afford to live more comfortably, such as delivering with motorcycles.

REFLECTION

Overall, it was an incredible experience as we got to travel to Penang as a group to make this video. It was very and tiring as we only had two days to do the shooting and we had to go to different locations but it was very fun as well.  Although it was rushed, we still had time to enjoy our trip there, and we got to visit interesting tourist spots while shooting the video as well, such as Lim Jetty, Chulia street etc. Editing the video was equally exhausting but in the end, we were very happy with the result. This isn't exactly a big assignment but what's important is that I had a great time while doing it and I am happy with the outcome.
